Question
Inquired about the reasons for Maersk's recent capacity additions, future capacity plans, and why the Gemini network has utilized fewer blank sailings compared to competitors despite recent volume declines.
Answer
The capacity increase was necessary to maintain service reliability while taking longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope due to the Red Sea crisis; capacity will be adjusted down when the Suez route reopens. Gemini has withdrawn a similar amount of capacity as competitors (20-21%), but has achieved this through flexible vessel swapping (e.g., replacing an 8,000 TEU ship with a 6,000 TEU one) rather than blank sailings, which is a key advantage of the new network structure.
