Joseph D. Margolis

Joseph D. Margolis has built an extensive career in real estate and finance, beginning as a real estate associate at Nutter, McClennen & Fish from 1986 to 1988 and serving as in-house counsel for The Prudential Insurance Company of America from 1988 to 1992. He further honed his expertise at Prudential Real Estate Investors from 1992 through 2004, and later ventured into entrepreneurship by co-founding Arsenal Real Estate Funds, where he contributed significantly to private real estate investment management until 2011.

After his entrepreneurial venture, he served as a Senior Managing Director and Partner at Penzance Properties from 2011 to July 2015, further establishing his reputation in the real estate development and investment arena. His transition to Extra Space Storage marked the next phase of his leadership journey, where prior to his current role he joined as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer in July 2015 and later ascended to the position of CEO in January 2017.

Beyond his executive role at Extra Space Storage, he has contributed to the industry through board roles, including serving on the board of directors at the company before and after his executive appointments, as well as his involvement as a director for Invitation Homes. His diverse background in law, real estate, and finance continues to guide his strategic leadership and drive operational excellence in the companies he serves.
