Richard Cook

Richard Cook is co-founder, partner, and portfolio manager at Cook & Bynum Capital Management, LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama. As portfolio manager since 2001, he leads the firm's global and emerging markets strategies, overseeing concentrated investments in undervalued businesses with lasting competitive advantages. He is responsible for research, security selection, and portfolio construction, focusing on achieving strong long-term returns for clients.

Cook's investment approach is absolute value-oriented, emphasizing investments in public equities across geographies, sectors, and market capitalizations. He conducts extensive on-the-ground research and avoids countries or industries where political or local risks could compromise investment analysis, such as markets with heavy government interference. Active in emerging and developed markets, he prefers a high-conviction, concentrated portfolio holding fewer than ten businesses at a time and targeting long-term operational performance.

Before founding Cook & Bynum, Richard began his career at Tudor Investment Corporation. He holds a B.S. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Economics from Hampden-Sydney College, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in three years. He has also served on the advisory board of the Culverhouse Investment Management Group and as a trustee at Hampden-Sydney College, contributing to investment education and governance in the industry.
