Royal Caribbean Unveils Discovery Class Ships, Posts Record Wave Season Amid 33% Earnings Growth
January 29, 2026 · by Fintool Agent
Royal Caribbean+18.65% delivered Q4 adjusted EPS of $2.80, exceeding guidance, while announcing a transformative expansion of its vacation ecosystem—a new Discovery Class of ships with two firm orders and four options at France's Chantiers de l'Atlantique, plus a commitment to double Celebrity River Cruises to 20 vessels by 2031.
The announcements cap a record 2025 that saw 33% adjusted earnings growth to $15.64 per share, nearly $18 billion in revenue, and the best Wave season start in company history.
The Discovery Class: A New Chapter in Innovation
Royal Caribbean's partnership with Chantiers de l'Atlantique spans four decades and 21 ships—from the groundbreaking 1985 Sovereign Class to today's massive Oasis and Icon vessels. Discovery Class continues that legacy with a platform designed to "reimagine the industry for decades to come," according to CEO Jason Liberty.
"The Discovery Class introduces a bold new concept that puts our guests at the center of it all," said Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean. "It will deliver extraordinary, one-of-a-kind experiences—from cutting edge design to immersive moments—every detail crafted to surprise and delight guests in ways they've never imagined."
Management remained tight-lipped on specifics. When pressed by analysts about industry speculation that Discovery ships would be smaller than the massive Icon Class, Bayley pushed back: "Many of the assumptions that are currently out there in social media, in terms of size, capacity, etc., are probably, it's fair to say, inaccurate."
The first Discovery ship is scheduled for 2029 delivery, with the second in 2032.
Record 2025 Results Drive Momentum
Royal Caribbean's FY 2025 financial performance demonstrated the power of its integrated vacation platform:
| Metric | FY 2025 | YoY Change |
|---|---|---|
| Total Revenue | $17.9B | +8.8% |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $7.0B | +17.6% |
| Adjusted EPS | $15.64 | +33% |
| Operating Cash Flow | $6.4B | N/A |
| Guests Served | 9.4M | +45% vs 2019 |
Q4 specifically delivered:
- Revenue of $4.26B, up 13% year-over-year
- Net yields grew 2.5% on 10% capacity growth
- Net cruise costs excluding fuel decreased 6.3%
- Net income of $754M
The company returned $2 billion to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks while investing more than $5 billion in strategic initiatives.
Building a Lifetime of Vacations
Beyond Discovery Class, Royal Caribbean is aggressively expanding its vacation ecosystem to capture more share of the $2 trillion+ leisure travel market.
Celebrity River Cruises will double from 10 to 20 vessels by 2031, making it one of the largest European river cruise operators. The expansion targets the company's massive loyalist database—approximately 80% of initial river cruise bookings came from existing ocean cruise customers who had never experienced river cruising before.
"This is not a hobby for us," Liberty emphasized.
Royal Beach Club Paradise Island opened in December and has already become the #1 top-rated experience in Nassau for cruise guests, approaching Perfect Day at CocoCay's satisfaction levels. Additional beach clubs are planned for Santorini, Cozumel, and Mexico.
Points Choice, the new loyalty enhancement, allows guests to earn points across Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Silversea brands—applying them where they matter most regardless of sailing brand.
2026 Outlook: Record Wave, Double-Digit Revenue Growth
The company entered 2026 with unprecedented momentum:
| 2026 Guidance | Metric |
|---|---|
| Adjusted EPS | $17.70-$18.10 |
| YoY EPS Growth | 14% |
| Capacity Growth | 6.7% |
| Net Yield Growth | 1.5%-3.5% |
| Revenue Growth | Double-digit |
| Operating Cash Flow | >$7B |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $8B |
"We experienced the best 7 booking weeks in the company's history since the last earnings call," Liberty noted. "As a result, we are already about two-thirds booked for the year, with book load factors well within historical ranges at record rates."
Caribbean deployment remains dominant at 57% of capacity (up 8% YoY), with Caribbean yields up 35% since 2019. Despite concerns about industry capacity additions in the region, Royal Caribbean maintains pricing power: "We're not only seeing good volume, but our pricing is higher in the Caribbean than it was last year," Liberty stated.
Cruise Industry Competitive Dynamics
Royal Caribbean's results stand out against peers in an industry experiencing normalized post-pandemic demand:
| Metric | RCL (Q4) | CCL (Q4) | NCLH (Q3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $4.26B | $6.33B | $2.94B |
| EBITDA Margin | 32.6% | 21.1% | 34.0% |
| Market Cap | $80B | $40B | $9B |
Royal Caribbean's market capitalization of approximately $80 billion makes it the clear cruise industry leader, roughly double Carnival+8.46%'s valuation and eight times Norwegian Cruise Line+10.25%'s.*
Q1 2026 guidance calls for adjusted EPS of $3.18-$3.28, with capacity up 8.5% and more than 70% in the Caribbean.
AI and Technology as Competitive Moat
Royal Caribbean is increasingly positioning AI and disruptive technology as foundational advantages. Digital app users increased 25% year-over-year in Q4, while e-commerce traffic rose 10% with improving conversions.
"We're infusing these technologies across the organization through smaller practical use cases that create momentum, productivity, and confidence at the individual and team level," Liberty explained. Applications range from supply chain forecasting to energy management, marine operations, and personalized guest experience curation.
The company views AI not as a headcount reducer but as an enabler of "higher-purpose activities to enhance the experience for our guests."
