Shaan Lal

Shaan Lal is a Partner and Portfolio Manager at Sona Asset Management, where he leads the Convertibles & Equity-Linked group. He joined Sona in April 2018 as the first Senior Analyst in the New York City office and was promoted to Partner in January 2025. In his current role, he runs the convertibles business globally, covering the US, Europe, and Asia, with a specialized focus on convertibles, equity-linked securities, and investments across the credit spectrum—including high yield, distressed, and structured credit instruments.

Prior to joining Sona Asset Management, Shaan was a Credit Analyst at Panning Capital Management, a hedge fund specializing in high yield and distressed credit, and began his investment career as an Associate at SecondMarket, focusing on illiquid assets such as fixed income products, pre-IPO shares, and bankruptcy claims. His expertise spans complex capital structures, cross-market portfolio strategies, and the management of risk during periods of market stress.

Shaan holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance and Accounting from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, with a minor in Mathematics. He is recognized for his significant contributions to convertible and credit investing, proven ability in building international investment platforms, and leadership in developing strategies that deliver uncorrelated, positive returns across various market cycles.
