David Iben

David Iben is the Chief Investment Officer, Managing Member, Founder, and Chairman of the Board of Governors at Kopernik Global Investors, LLC, based in Tampa, Florida. He leads the firm’s investment process as Lead Portfolio Manager for the Kopernik Global All-Cap and Global Unconstrained strategies, and as Co-Portfolio Manager for the Kopernik International and Global Long-Term Opportunities strategies, with an investment approach focused on fundamental analysis and identifying undervalued securities across global markets.

His specific expertise lies in global value investing, with a focus on global equities, including emerging markets, natural resources, energy, commodities, and other real assets. Kopernik Global Investors is noted for its contrarian and independent investment philosophy, often taking substantial positions in sectors that are underappreciated by mainstream markets, such as energy, materials, and cyclical industries.

Prior to founding Kopernik in 2013, David was Director and Head of the Global Value Team at Vinik Asset Management and Co-Founder, Chief Investment Officer, and Co-President at Tradewinds Global Investors, where he managed over $38 billion in assets. He began his career at Farmers Group, eventually becoming CIO responsible for $16 billion in assets, and has held senior investment roles at several firms. David earned a BS from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from the USC Marshall School of Business, and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
