John Kim

John Kim is the Founder, Managing Director, and Portfolio Manager at Night Owl Capital Management, LLC, a Greenwich-based hedge fund established in 1993. He leads the firm’s investment strategy, specializing in concentrated, long-term public equity investments with a focus on mid-cap and large-cap companies, primarily in the United States. His responsibilities include overseeing $650M+ in assets and managing a portfolio with significant allocations to technology, communication services, and financial sectors.

Prior to founding Night Owl in 2003, Kim worked as an Associate in the Mergers & Acquisitions Department at Morgan Stanley, and previously held analyst roles at J. Bush & Co. and consultant roles at Mercer Management Consulting. With over two decades of investment experience, he has become known for generating strong, risk-adjusted returns—evidenced by top-quartile hedge fund rankings and substantial portfolio growth.

Kim earned his Bachelor’s degree magna cum laude in Ethics, Politics, and Economics from Yale University in 1995, followed by a J.D. from Yale Law School in 2000. His expertise lies in fundamental equity research, portfolio management, and identifying growth opportunities in sectors such as technology, financials, and communication services, making significant contributions to the hedge fund industry through disciplined, value-oriented investment processes.
