Matthew Swaim

Matthew Swaim is the Chairman, Managing Director, and Portfolio Manager at Advisory Research, Inc., bringing over 25 years of investment experience to the firm. Based in Evanston, IL, he leads the investment team in designing and managing highly concentrated, research-intensive equity portfolios, primarily for institutional clients. Swaim is also the Chair of the Executive Committee and serves as the Executive Chairman, overseeing firm strategy and client alignment.

Swaim's expertise centers on U.S. small- and mid-cap equities, with a particular focus on value-oriented strategies that target companies with competitive moats, reinvestment opportunities, and aligned management incentives. He emphasizes fundamental analysis, seeking durable businesses with attractive return profiles in underfollowed or inefficient market niches, notably running strategies such as the Advisory Research Small Cap Value Fund.

Before joining Advisory Research in 2005, Swaim worked in assurance and business advisory at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. He holds a BS in accounting and business administration from the University of Kansas and an MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business, is a CFA charterholder, and has passed the Uniform CPA Examination. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping client-oriented investment processes and the firm's transition to a 100% employee-owned structure.
