Brett Nelson

Brett Nelson is Managing Director, Portfolio Management, and a Partner at EJF Capital LLC, based in Arlington, VA. Since joining EJF at its founding in 2005, Mr. Nelson has held multiple financial services portfolio management roles with a specific emphasis on event-driven investments, including tender offers, activist positions, and spinoffs. He is recognized for his expertise in the financial sector, especially across private credit, structured finance, and both public and private debt and equity investments in banks, financial services, and fintech companies.

Prior to EJF Capital, Brett Nelson served as Vice President in the Alternative Asset Group at Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group (FBR), where he managed investments in private investment vehicles focused on alternative asset strategies. His extensive industry experience centers on the financial industry and related assets, with tactical investments considering legislative and regulatory shifts impacting capital markets and regional banks.

Mr. Nelson holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Engineering in Systems Engineering, and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Virginia. He is a CFA charterholder and actively contributes to the investment community through roles such as chairing the Investment Committee at The Langley School.
