Shuntaro Takeuchi

Shuntaro Takeuchi is a Portfolio Manager and Head of Research at Matthews International Capital Management LLC, based in San Francisco. He manages the firm’s Japan Strategy, including leadership of the Matthews Japan Fund (since 2019) and co-management of the Matthews Asia Growth Strategy and Matthews Japan Active ETF. His primary investment focus is on Japanese equity markets, covering sectors and asset classes such as publicly traded common stocks, preferred stocks, and convertible securities of companies with substantial ties to Japan.

Prior to joining Matthews Asia in 2016 as a Senior Research Analyst, Mr. Takeuchi was Executive Director for Japan Equity Sales at UBS Securities LLC in New York and held several senior roles in UBS Japan Securities, including Head of International Equity Sales and Special Situations Analyst. He began his career in U.S. Equity Sales at Merrill Lynch Japan. His background demonstrates deep expertise in both Japanese and international equities, with a special emphasis on institutional sales and research for Asian markets.

Mr. Takeuchi holds a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce and Management from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo and is fluent in Japanese. His significant contributions include the successful management and development of Asia-focused equity strategies at Matthews, as well as providing strategic leadership within the firm’s research efforts.
