Nicholas Borst

Nicholas Borst is Vice President and Director of China Research at Seafarer Capital Partners, LLC, based in San Rafael, California. In his current role, he focuses on analyzing economic and financial developments in Greater China and leads the firm's research on Chinese markets, policy, and regulatory issues. His responsibilities include producing in-depth reports on Chinese financial reform, cross-border investment flows, and evaluating the implications of China’s economic landscape for U.S. investors.

Mr. Borst specializes in the Chinese financial sector, including listed equities, shadow banking, and state-owned enterprise reform, with a particular emphasis on opportunities and risks for foreign investors in China. At Seafarer, he provides expert insight into Chinese equities and associated asset classes, guiding investment strategies for emerging and frontier markets with a clear sectoral focus on China.

Prior to joining Seafarer in 2018, Borst was a senior analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, where he covered Greater China, and previously served as China Program Manager at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He holds a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from the University of Arizona, a Master’s in International Relations and Economics from Johns Hopkins SAIS, and is a CFA charterholder. His research has been featured in leading financial publications, and he is recognized for thought leadership through published works, blog founding, and repeated testimony before the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission.
