James Buxton

James Buxton, MD, is a Principal at New Enterprise Associates (NEA) in New York, focusing on investments within the healthcare sector, particularly the life sciences space. As a member of NEA’s Healthcare team, he is actively involved in sourcing, evaluating, and supporting early- and growth-stage biotechnology and medical innovation companies. His investment focus spans cutting-edge life sciences, including therapeutics and biotechnology platforms that address significant unmet medical needs.

Prior to his role as Principal, Buxton was a Senior Associate at NEA and previously gained experience as an investor at SR One Capital Management and as an Investment Banking Summer Associate at Morgan Stanley. He also brings a clinical background as a physician and cardiothoracic surgeon, having trained and practiced in the UK National Health Service and served as a Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery at St George’s University Hospitals.

Dr. Buxton’s academic credentials include an MBA with a healthcare management focus from The Wharton School (as a Thouron Scholar), an MD and a BSc in surgical and medical sciences from University College London (UCL), and completion of the International Baccalaureate at King’s College School Wimbledon.
