Michael Bertz

Michael Bertz, Ph.D., P.E., CFA, served as Portfolio Manager at Kennedy Capital Management LLC, with responsibility for the Extended Small Cap strategy, where he specialized in managing and selecting investments within the U.S. small-cap equity sector. His focus included overseeing portfolios for institutional clients such as major pension funds, notably leading the Alameda County Employees’ Retirement Association’s portfolio from 2010 until his retirement in 2024.

Dr. Bertz began his investment career in 2000 and joined Kennedy Capital Management in 2006 as a research analyst; he later served as Director of Research from 2007 to 2013. Prior to his tenure at Kennedy, he was a senior research analyst at WR Hambrecht & Co and worked as a technology analyst at Morgan Keegan & Company. His background also includes research roles in cognitive science and engineering at Georgia Tech and experience as a structural engineer at KPFF Consulting Engineers.

Michael holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Structural Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as a B.E.D. in Architecture and a B.S. in Engineering Physics from Miami University in Ohio. He has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a Professional Engineer (P.E.), combining rigorous technical expertise with a deep understanding of equity analysis and portfolio management in the small-cap space.
