James Flynn

James Flynn is Managing Partner at Deerfield Management in New York, overseeing the firm since 2005 after joining in 2000. He leads the development and execution of Deerfield’s investment strategies, steering the firm’s evolution into one of the largest and most influential healthcare-focused investment managers globally. His responsibilities include directing investments across the entire healthcare ecosystem, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, healthcare services, and emerging areas like healthcare IT and artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Flynn’s sector focus is steadfastly on healthcare, spanning both public and private markets, venture capital, and structured finance. Under his leadership, Deerfield has established specialized initiatives like the Deerfield Institute for healthcare information, Deerfield Discovery and Development for research, and a healthcare innovation center in Manhattan to foster collaboration among industry, academia, and nonprofits.

Before Deerfield, Flynn was a top-ranked healthcare analyst at Furman Selz, Vice President of Corporate Development at Alpharma Inc., and began his career at Kidder, Peabody & Co., specializing in specialty pharmaceuticals.
