Public Employees Retirement Association of Colorado
The Public Employees' Retirement Association of Colorado (Colorado PERA) is a public pension fund headquartered in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1931, PERA manages retirement and other benefit assets for Colorado’s public employees, serving more than 700,000 current and former state employees, educators, and other public workers. As one of the largest public pension plans in the U.S., PERA manages defined benefit and defined contribution plans focusing on cost-effective, high-quality investment management. PERA employs over 50 investment professionals and provides a variety of retirement and healthcare benefits to eligible participants.
Investment Strategy
Colorado PERA employs a long-term, diversified investment approach targeting a mix of global equity, fixed income, private equity, real estate, and alternatives, guided by a strategic asset allocation that is periodically reviewed and optimized to balance risk and return. The portfolio is designed to reduce volatility and meet PERA’s long-term benefit obligations, with much of the investment management handled internally to minimize costs and maximize net returns for members. Recently, the allocation has shifted to reduce global equity exposure while increasing private equity and real estate, further enhancing diversification. The investment policy is overseen by the Board of Trustees, with an expected long-term rate of return of 7.25%.
